Does anyone have a copy of the 1840 - 42 Eardisland parish Tithe Map? I would very much like to get a copy for the Heritage/History section of the Community Led Plan. I can arrange copying/printing. Many thanks
Merry

Hi Sandy
Yes you do need a rod licence for fishing on the Arrow, unless your grandson is under 12. It looks like you get an annual licence starting on the 1st April, or 1 day licences.
You can get them at the Post Office, or online at the Post Office website. The Post Office has a good information page here:

Congratulations to all those involved in setting up and organising the Community Shop and it's grand opening on Saturday.
It was so nice to see a good turn out for the event, proof that the shop is already proving a valuable asset to the community..

Eardisland In Bloom Team

I am a member of the E Team (Eardisland In Bloom Team). We are volunteers who are attempting to brighten up the village by repairing public footpaths, planting new growth and picking up litter. At the moment we are endeavouring to convert the plot of land next to the Dovecote, unfairly described in some quarters as an insignificant piece of dirt, into a small and tidy garden before our shop opens in April. Anyone who would like to join us in making a positive contribution to the villaga will be more than welcome.
Peter Dedman.

Hi Peter
If you let me know of any specific dates you are working on projects I can put them up on the front page of the website, and in the calender. Or alternatively you could post them on the forum, although we can't always guarantee that will be on the front page.
Lovely to see the new crocus coming up in front of the Manor House.

You may be aware that there is a team working on the possibility of opening a Community Shop in the village. We hope to be able to provide Newspapers on a daily basis including Sunday, you may have to walk to the shop though!

Changes to Recycling Collections

It was interesting to read an article on Herefordshire Councils website about the changes to the way recycling collections are going to be made. I've posted the article in the 'Latest News' section on this website.
I think it'll be great to be able to recycle glass and juice cartons in the new wheelie bins.
I was quite surprised that the deadline for requesting a small size bin is the end of January, as I hadn't heard anything about the scheme coming to Eardisland.

road signs

Visual Pollution for no benefit – Eardisland’s road signs
We should minimise signage, rather than adopt a policy of increasing unnecessary, unsightly and expensive street furniture which fails to serve any social or economic purpose. The current oversized high-visibility arrangements, however well- intended, are ugly and the claim that putting more information on fewer boards is preferable is discredited.
• A single ‘Eardisland’ sign; a farm gate across verges to create the ‘gateway’ effect and the basic, vehicle activated solar powered 30 mph restriction sign, at each end of the village should replace the current structures in place.
• The Twinning Association should be permitted to erect a board, smaller than the Eardisland sign, in an appropriate location at no more than two sites - at the Association’s expense. An aesthetically designed sign, ‘Please drive carefully through Our village’, should be placed appropriately at each end, with a ‘and mind out for ducks!’ added to the sign at the eastern approach.
• ‘Heritage’ signs – the white on brown version – should be retained outside the village or on the parish boundary. Information can be duplicated once, such as by pub signs or tea room sandwich boards, within the village.
If you agree, or have ideas on improving the current arrangements, please make yourself known on this part of the website. If support is evident, a way forward can be discussed.

I agree Hugh, but unfortunately most people don't even seem to notice the visual mess - and most people don't seem to mind.
As most visitors to Eardisland come to experience and enjoy its unique aesthetic charm surely it seems sensible to preserve it for them (and the money they bring with them) if not for the residents? What do the new signs actually achieve? Why are they so big and ugly? And were the villagers consulted first?
The 'visitor attraction' villages of the Cotswolds would never allow this sort of 'clutter' to cloud their entrances - I remember reading about one in Country Living that had all the signs made of oak. Rather than the huge introduction signs they landscaped the entrance with trees and flowers so you 'experienced' an entry (and departure) to the village. The added benefit was that they found drivers dropped their speed through the village. It is thought that the deliberate visual indicator created by the landscaping and attractive signage was more powerful because drivers have become accustomed to a barrage of ugly signs and largely ignored them. It also introduced the village as a community rather than simply another place to pass on the road.
If you come into Pembridge, where I live, and really look you will see that the signs are a terrible mess and that there are far too many and they are far too large. They are completely incongruous with the medieval setting and together with the silly road narrowing (which of course, needs a range of signs all of its own) create a terrible first impression. Eardisland doesn't need to go the same way and I think the new signs are not a good reflection of the type of village it is. It is such a shame.

I agree with both posts. Modern road signs aren't the most visually attractive impression one receives when entering the village. And what do they tell you anyway that you can't find out when you walk round the village.
Unfortunately the Highways Agency, European Directives and the culture of 'Health & Safety' has a lot to do with it.
Perhaps the PC could look into this?

I'd be interested to know if Merry feels that the road narrowing at Pembridge has had any effect on the speed of drivers entering and passing through the village. I agree it's not the most attractive feature, but so many drivers seem to ignore 30mph signs (however large they are) it may be a more effective method of safely reducing traffic speeds.
Many vehicles don't seem to slow down until they reach the bridge or first bend (as the survey a few years ago showed), and this worries me more than drivers first impressions of the village.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you Ben - you now know how much spare time you get with two little ones ( congratulations to both of you by the way!)
No, I don't think the chicanes make much difference to the speed through the middle of Pembridge, especially for motor bikes, HGV's and those who use the road often (it seems familiarity gives people confidence to go faster/ignore limits?) I think that the cars parked on the side of the road do slow people down though - this maybe an advantage to the parking trouble at the Green Elms layby?!!
I don't mind the chicanes or narrowings in principle, its just that they look so urban and ugly and I am sure there is a more natural and inviting way to create a road narrowing or single lane approach. The signs are so common place now that people, myself included, probably ignore most and only slow down when you need to. That's why I thought that maybe if the village boundaries were more visually marked (but in a natural/visual perception manner?) and a definite entry and exit were planned then people may take more care throughout because they were emotionally aware that they were driving in a village rather than simply through a village? Hard to explain what I mean really.......
I remember from when I started to drive (a long time ago.......), there used to be frequent speed checks in Canon Pyon and it created a sort of reputation/aura of fear, and I for one will automatically drop my speed there even now. So maybe the answer is to lobby for more speed checks?
best wishes to Bryony and the new baby

This is great. We lived in Eardisland a few years ago and it would have been fantastic to have a forum to discuss village issues.
This has the potential to be a wonderful tool for the village.
Great website.
