EARDISLAND VILLAGE NEWS FOR 6th May
COMMUNITY SHOP – the new village shop, which is housed in the ancient dovecote by the mill stream, was officially opened at noon on Saturday.
Albert Sheffield (chair of the shop committee) welcomed everyone and thanked all those who have helped in the setting up period and said that the shop is being well supported by both volunteers and shoppers. Paul Jones, who has been the village postman for 17 years, cut the ribbon marking the official opening. Albert said that Paul’s example of consistent quality service and reliability should be held up as an ideal for the shop.
Volunteers are still needed, call at the shop for details.
BOWLING CLUB - Eardisland Bowling Club has made an encouraging start to the 2010 season, with a near record turnout on Opening Day, followed by victories in the first two club fixtures. The first was a particularly fine effort at Presteigne on Wednesday evening, with Eardisland coping the best on a tricky green. The visitors piled on the early pressure and with the hosts unable to respond, claimed victory by 76 shots to 54. Gill Williams and Phil Sharp were both winning skips, but best rink went to skip Tony Stokes, Lynda Lynne, John Hill and Neil Powell. The side was quickly back in action the following evening with a home match against a strong looking St Martins side. Following heavy afternoon rain, the game was played in constant drizzle, although the surface played true and was a credit to the groundsman, Tony Stokes, who, once again skipped the best rink of Mavis Tantrum, Phil Lynne and Tom Chandler. There was also a win for John Moses, whilst a thrilling draw for Phil Sharp was enough to secure a win by 63 shots to 56.
HISTORY GROUP – We will be joined by Peter Reavill (7:30pm on 17th May in the Village Hall). Peter is the Finds Liaison Officer for Herefordshire and Shropshire in the National Portable Antiquities Scheme. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered, by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work or by metal-detector users. Such discoveries offer an important source for understanding our past. The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to identify and record archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. Peter will start with a presentation on the work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and will highlight some recent local discoveries. After an interval for refreshments, Peter will then conduct a session giving advice on any items brought along to the evening. What have you found in your garden? Come and join us for an archaeological “Antiques Road Show”. Have your finds identified and dated by Peter.
100 CLUB – The winners for the April draw were, 1st Brian Thomasson, 2nd June Manzoni, 3rd Ruth Brinton-Bivand, 4th Peter Davenport.
If you would like to become a member of the 100 club which raises funds for St Mary’s church contact Serena Askew on 01544 388637.
